Groupe VII : Panicule lâche, 2+ fleurons hermaphrodites, ligule membraneuse, arête dorsale (nettement insérée en-dessous l'echancrure terminale de la lemme). Glumes de grande taille.
Plante annuelle de 5-20 cm, glabre, à racine fibreuse; tiges raides, dressées ou genouillées-ascendantes, fasciculées, longuement nues au sommet [Panicule contractée; aspect spiciforme] .
Écologie : (répartition d'après la flore) Lieux sablonneux, dans une grande partie de la France; nul dans la région méditerranéenne.
Répartition hors de France : Europe, presque toute.

Group VII: Loose panicle, 2+ fertile (hermaphrodite) florets, membranous ligule, dorsal awn (clearly inserted below the terminal cleft of the lemma); very long glumes:
A small annual with few to many spreading or prostrate stems 2-23 cm high, growing from a fibrous stock.
Ecology UK: (distribution according to flora) It is abundant and widespread in the British Isles on sandy heaths, rocks, dry land and walls.
Fleurs : munies de poils courts à la base, aristées; glumes lancéolées-aiguës, scabres ; glumelle inférieure égalant presque les glumes, bifide, à arête 1-2 fois plus longue que les glumes.
Floraison France : Avril-juin.
Flowers: Spikelets 2-flowered, in a short, close, spike-like panicle; glumes similar, 2.5-3.5 mm, hiding the florets, lanceolate, sub-acute, 1-nerved; lemma 2.5-3.5 mm, lanceolate, acute, rough on the keel, with 5 fine nerves, an acute, bifid apex, a bent awn arising from the middle of the central nerve and a tuft of hairs at the base; palea shorter than lemma, with two smooth keels; anther 0.3 mm long.
